Homeowner AC checklist

Steps to check before calling the professional

Before you schedule service, there are a few simple things worth checking. This page helps homeowners rule out common issues like thermostat settings, dirty filters, tripped breakers, blocked airflow, and visible drain problems. If the issue is still there, Tropi-Kool is ready to help.

Quick AC troubleshooting checklist

These are simple homeowner checks only. If anything looks unsafe, if you smell burning, or if the system is leaking heavily, turn it off and call right away.

1

Check the thermostat first

Make sure the thermostat is set to cool, not heat or fan only. Lower the temperature setting a few degrees below room temperature and check that the display is working.

2

Look at the air filter

A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make the system struggle to cool. If the filter looks clogged, replace it and give the system a little time to respond.

3

Check the breaker or power switch

If the system will not turn on, check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. Also make sure the indoor and outdoor shutoff switches have not been turned off.

4

Inspect for water around the unit

Water near the indoor unit can point to a clogged drain line or another issue. If you see active leaking, it is best to turn the system off and call before water damage gets worse.

5

Clear visible debris around the outdoor unit

Leaves, grass, and other debris can block airflow and reduce performance. Make sure the outdoor unit has breathing room and is not packed in by yard waste.

6

Listen and smell for warning signs

Grinding, banging, buzzing, or a burning smell are signs you should not ignore. Turn the system off and call a professional instead of letting it keep running.

7

Check the vents and airflow

Make sure supply vents are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Weak airflow in multiple rooms can point to a bigger system issue.

8

Look for ice on the system

Ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil is a sign something is wrong. Turn the system off and let it thaw. Running it longer can make the problem worse.

HVAC drain line and system components that can be checked before calling for service

Fun fact (and a quick DIY check)

One of the most common causes of AC breakdowns in Florida is a clogged condensate drain line. If you're a DIYer and you see water around the indoor unit, you can sometimes pull the clog out by hooking a wet/dry vacuum to the outside drain line and letting it run for a minute or two.

If the leak continues, the drain line won't clear, or you're not sure what you're looking at, turn the system off and call Tropi-Kool to help prevent water damage.

Call right away if you notice:

  • The AC is blowing warm air and not cooling the home.
  • There is water leaking around the unit.
  • The system will not turn on at all.
  • You smell burning or hear loud unusual noises.
  • The system keeps shutting off during extreme heat.
  • You have already checked the basics and the problem is still there.
